San Diego Neighborhood Inn-Siders Guide: Normal Heights

Normal Heights…such an eclectic neighborhood, families and students, immigrants and natives all occupy this mid-city neighborhood. The main corridor on Adams Ave, known as “Antique Row”, is filled with antique shops, used book and vintage clothing stores, several neighborhood bars and a variety of eclectic restaurants. If you enjoy a little diversity then make sure to venture to this area.

• If you find yourself in Normal Heights early in the day and are in the mood for something healthy, fresh and light, visit Frutilandia and try their delicious Escamocha, a Mexican fruit salad prepared with condensed milk, coconut shavings and sliced almonds. The store doesn’t look like much from the front, but inside it is clean and the fruit is always fresh. The people that run it are super nice. FYI, they only take cash.

Jyoti Bihanga, on Adams Avenue, is a delicious vegetarian/vegan restaurant run by monks! For a hearty meal try their popular Neatloaf Special with mash potatoes. You’ll leave there satisfied and probably in a very relaxed state of mind. They are open until 3pm on Wednesdays.

• For something different, try Marisco’s German Taco Truck 3 (pronounced like Herman), parked on University Ave & 35th St. You will have to eat standing up or in your car. They have delicious
seafood dishes and their seafood tacos are like no others! It is a very popular place for a reason.

• A wonderful place for vegetarians and carnivores alike…Pomegranate Russian-Georgian Restaurant on El Cajon Blvd. (area is called North Park, next to Normal Heights). The dishes are traditional and exquisite. Give them a try – you will not regret your decision.

• For a delicious Persian meal (with a hand in Greek and Mediterranean cultural cuisine), try
Soltan Banoo on Park Blvd. The dishes are plentiful, the flavors authentic, and the service genuine. Try not to leave without trying a cup of their Pomegranate soup.

If you like cheesecake then drive to The Incredible Cheesecake Company. When you get there you’ll probably ask yourself, “am I in the right place? Can they possibly make good cheesecake here?” YES and YES! This place is not pretentious, they don’t have any fancy décor they just make delicious cheesecake. You can also pick up a cup of coffee to enjoy with your slice. Get there before 7 p.m.
